If you’ve landed on this page, chances are it’s because you went looking for Frida Kahlo Museum tickets on the museum’s website and saw that all tickets are sold out during your stay in Mexico City.
Fear not, though!
Even though tickets may be sold out on the museum’s website, you still have a couple of options. Today, I’m going to share them with you so that you can make the most out of your trip even if Frida Kahlo Museum tickets are sold out!
The Frida Kahlo museum, also called Casa Azul, is one of the most popular museums in Mexico City, but it’s also pretty small. That means that there are only a limited number of tickets per day, and tickets to the Frida Kahlo museum often sell out days or even weeks in advance!
In this post I’ll list out your options, starting from the best and working our way backwards, so that you can just work your way down the list depending on availability and hopefully end up with a good option.
Option 1 – Check Ticket Availability from other Vendors
The main vendor of Frida Kahlo house tickets is, of course, the museum’s website.
However, if tickets are sold out there it’s worth double-checking that there aren’t any tickets available here or here too.
These websites seem to be aligned with the availability on the museum’s website but it’s worth double-checking.
If you scored tickets that’s fabulous! You’re welcome, and you’ll probably have clicked off this post by now. No luck? No problem, let’s move on to option 2.
Option 2 – Book a Mexico City Tour That Has Tickets Included
If all museum tickets are sold out there’s still a way to visit the museum – by joining a guided tour that includes the museum on its itinerary.
These tour providers buy their tickets to the museum in advance for the participants of the tour, so if there are spaces available on the tour you’ll have a ticket to the museum included!
A friend I met at my hostel took this cycling tour of Mexico City that included Frida Kahlo museum tickets and said it was a great experience!
Another option is this full-day tour of the UNESCO-Listed Xochimilco, the neighbourhood of Coyoacan, the UNAM campus and the Frida Kahlo Museum!
Both of these tours include an option to add Frida Kahlo tickets to your tour.
Both options are, obviously, slightly more expensive than only visiting the museum, but not massively so.
And considering you get to also visit other areas on these tours it’s actually a pretty good idea to join one if you’re desperate to visit the Frida Kahlo museum.
If you’ve managed to find a tour that includes the Frida Kahlo Museum despite tickets being sold out then goodbye! You’ll have probably left the page by now. Enjoy your trip!
If you’re still here, chances are you haven’t had any luck (in which case you must be visiting Mexico City during a very busy period) I have some bad news for you – you probably won’t be able to visit the Frida Kahlo Museum.
If you’re absolutely desperate to see it you have two remaining options:
Options 3 and 4 if Frida Kahlo Museum Tickets are Sold Out
The first option is to constantly check the museum’s website. There’s a chance you’ll be able to snap up tickets if someone cancels, but that’s not super likely.
The second option is to just turn up at Casa Azul and wait in line in case somebody doesn’t turn up for their allotted time slot.
I’ve heard of people waiting for hours without ever being able to get inside though, so it’s up to you whether or not you’re willing to risk it.
Option 5: Museo de Arte Moderno
If all other options have failed you won’t be able to visit the Frida Kahlo museum. However, there are a few other Frida-inspired things you can do that are almost as good!
The first and probably best idea is to visit the Museo de Arte Moderno. This museum contains numerous paintings by Kahlo, including The Two Fridas, one of her most famous paintings.
You’ll find the museum in Mexico City’s Chapultepec Park and entry costs 70 pesos ($3.50).
Option 6: Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo
The final option if Frida Kahlo Museum tickets are sold out is to visit the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo.
Some people actually prefer this to Casa Azul!
Frida and Diego lived and worked here from two houses on the same compound which are connected by a small bridge.
Frida lived and worked here from 1934 until 1941, and Diego lived and worked here for much longer, from 1934 until he died in 1957. You can visit both houses in the compound.
Diego Rivera’s building looks like he’s just stepped outside (you can even explore his studio).
Unfortunately, the only original part of Frida Kahlo’s house still there is the bathroom. The bathtub here features in her 1938 painting Lo que el agua me dio (What the water gave me).
That said though, this is the perfect option if Frida Kahlo museum tickets are sold out but you want to visit a house that Frida lived and worked in. Tickets cost 40 pesos ($2) and you don’t need to (and can’t) book them in advance.
Frida Kahlo museum tickets sell out like hotcakes, and you’re definitely not the first person to miss out! Fortunately, though, you’re not out of options.
Hopefully this post has taught you how to get Frida Kahlo museum tickets – even if they’re sold out. Have a great trip!
